Thursday Apr 08, 2021

Students at Sunnydale High, including Buffy, Willow, and Xander, start to slip into waking dreams. It’s not too long before the walls of reality themselves start to blur and crumble. The secret to saving Sunnydale, and perhaps the world, might lie in the mind of a comatose boy who just wanted to play baseball. But to save the day, Buffy will have to confront her greatest fear.
Hear us discuss…
- Stephanie tries to give Xander credit (and very nearly succeeds)
- Asteroid bodies are cool
- The trauma around divorce
- How this episode sets up the psychology of Buffy for the seasons to come
Shout out to the Becoming Buffy podcast for their comments and Jen Campbell, a YouTuber recommended by listener Chloe on issues of disability.

There’s a new sheriff—er, principal—in town, and his name is Snyder, and he wants YOU to perform in the talent show. But when one of the talent show participants is found dead in the locker room (yes, that locker room), stabbed with a knife, Buffy and crew will need to hope their talent for solving mysteries extends to the mundane as well as the mystical.
Hear us discuss…
- Talent shows in high school
- Dolls and dummies: cool or creepy?
- Stephanie knows all about the Power Circle!
- Let’s just forget the word “nubile”
- But seriously, so much objectification of a teenage girl here
Trigger warnings
Cancer, sexual harassment

Willow has a binary beau! While helping Giles and the new computer teacher, Miss Calendar, scan library books into the computer, Willow meets Malcolm online. As her obsession deepens, strange things start happening to computer systems around Sunnydale and beyond. Even Buffy’s best spy look might not be enough to take on a demon loose in the internet.
Hear us discuss…
- The show’s take on online dating
- Kara’s personal story of an online friendship made flesh!
- Stephanie’s obsession with cults
- How much this episode gets right (and wrong) about the perils of computers
- We cannot get Miss Calendar’s name right (sorry, Jenny)
Trigger warnings…
Cults, death by neck snapping, kidnapping, suicide (hanging)

Thursday Apr 01, 2021
The Master dispatches three powerful vampires to take care of his Slayer problem once and for all. Buffy survives only with the intervention of Angel, at the cost of learning his terrible secret. Despite his actions so far, Angel might be less friend than foe. Will Buffy have what it takes to deal with this betrayal?

- Is dinner in a baggie the hot new trend?
- Buffy’s mom’s priorities
- So much new vampire lore, backstory for Angel and Darla

S1E06: “The Pack”
Thursday Mar 25, 2021
Thursday Mar 25, 2021
A trip to the zoo leaves Xander acting strange—well, stranger than usual for a horny teenage boy. He and his new group of friends think they rule the school. It’s up to Buffy, Willow, and Giles to save Xander from his animal self before he crosses lines that shouldn’t be crossed.
Hear us discuss…
The absolute lack of class supervision on a field trip. Also, bullying, of course. And this is an episode with some extremely racist content. Hey, is Giles ok with all this head trauma? Finally, Kara and Stephanie both dig deep into how poorly this episode handles issues of rape culture, masculinity, and sexual assault.
Trigger warnings
Animal death, bullying, implied cannibalism, racism, sexual assault/rape

S1E05: “Never Kill a Boy on the First Date”
Thursday Mar 25, 2021
Thursday Mar 25, 2021
An ancient prophecy threatens to derail Buffy’s date with sensitive Owen. Buffy needs to balance her desire for hot teenage romance with her responsibilities to stop the rise of the Anointed One, a super-powerful vampire who will further the Master’s designs to escape his prison and wreak havoc on Sunnydale.
Hear us discuss…
Buffy’s dating pool in Sunnydale. Is Owen a better choice than Angel? Also, jealousy never looks good on anyone, but Xander somehow makes it look even worse. Giles might be overworking Buffy, and she deserves the break.
Trigger warnings
Child death, fatphobia, internalized misogyny, traffic collisions

S1E04: ”Teacher’s Pet”
Thursday Mar 18, 2021
Thursday Mar 18, 2021
After the disturbing death of a teacher who had the gall to be kind to Buffy, the substitute teacher is hot for students. Especially male students like Xander. But Buffy might have other problems, because Angel is back to warn her of a dangerous old enemy of the Master’s in town.
Hear us discuss…
Totally inappropriate teacher–student relationships, ew! This is such a horny episode, in the worst possible way. Fortunately, Buffy and Willow come through. Also, the existence of a “she-mantis” monster raises interesting questions, both about the nature of monsters in the Buffyverse, and whether or not this show is Othering female sexuality. What do you think?
Trigger warnings
Rape, sexual abuse of a minor
